Jill Scott,
also nicknamed “Jilly from Philly”, gained mainstream recognition in 2000 in the
midst of the Neo-Soul musical movement with the release of “Who Is Jill Scott?
Words and Sounds Vol. 1”, which went Platinum thanks to the success of songs
such as “Getting In the Way”, “Long Walk”, “He Loves Me” and “The Way”. Jill
was already making a name for herself in the Philadelphia music &
poetry/spoken word scene before the release of her debut album. In the 18 years
since, she has collaborated musically with artist ranging from Erykah Badu, The
Roots, Anthony Hamilton to legends like George Benson and Al Jarreau. She has
even worked with several Hip-Hop artists such as Eve and Dr. Dre.
She is also an
accomplished & critically acclaimed actress. She made her big screen debut
in 2007 in the movie “ Hounddog” and in Tyler Perry's, “Why Did I Get Married?”.
Jill’s acting has also seen her on a variety of television series in guest starting
roles and even as the lead in the HBO series based off of a series novels set
in Botswana, “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency” (which I watched & really
enjoyed!), playing a detective alongside Anika Noni Rose. She stays busy
working in acting realm having appeared in a variety of made for TV movies (for
LIFETIME). Ms. Scott has also provided her voice for the character of “Storm”
in the BET animated series of “Black Panther”. It is her amazing voice (and storytelling
abilities in her songwriting), her character portrayals and her humble attitude
& presence that makes her “relatable”.
When I heard her
song “Whenever You’re Around” the first time (released in 2007 on her “The Real
Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3” album), the song took me “there”…many ladies
can relate to what this song is about. It has a nice mid-tempo beat. The
passion Jill expresses in the song builds up nicely and by the end it makes you
want to grab a bottle of wine with Jill and some sister-girlfriends slightly
frustrated with the men in our lives (smile) and chat it up…or better yet, SLAY
IT UP!
